The Impact of a Target on Newsvendor Decisions

چکیده
Goal achieving is a commonly observed phenomenon in practice, and it plays an important role in decision making. In this paper we investigate the impact of a target on newsvendor decisions. We take into account the risk and model the effect of a target by maximizing the satisficing measure of a newsvendor’s profit with respect to that target. We study two satisficing measures: i) CVaR (Conditional Value at Risk) satisficing measure that evaluates the highest confidence level of CVaR achieving the target; and ii) entropic satisficing measure that assesses the smallest risk tolerance level under which the certainty equivalent for exponential utility function achieves the target. For both satisficing measures, we find that the optimal ordering quantity increases with the target level. We determine an optimal order quantity for a target based newsvendor and charactize its properties with respect to, for example, product’s profit margin.

Risk premiums and certainty equivalents of loss-averse newsvendors of bounded utility
Loss-averse behavior makes the newsvendors avoid the losses more than seeking the probable gains as the losses have more psychological impact on the newsvendor than the gains. In economics and decision theory, the classical newsvendor models treat losses and gains equally likely, by disregarding the expected utility when the newsvendor is loss-averse. Moreover, the use of unbounded utility to m...
متن کاملThe Impact of Demand Uncertainty on Consumer Subsidies for Green Technology Adoption
This paper studies government subsidies for green technology adoption while considering the manufacturing industry’s response. Government subsidies offered directly to consumers impact the supplier’s production and pricing decisions. Our analysis expands the current understanding of the price-setting newsvendor model, incorporating the external influence from the government, who is now an addit...
متن کاملObservation Bias: The Impact of Demand Censoring on Newsvendor Level and Adjustment Behavior
In an experimental newsvendor setting where 310 subjects make 50 repeated newsvendor decisions with the same known ex-ante parameters, we investigate three phenomena: Level behavior – the decision-maker’s average ordering tendency; adjustment behavior – the tendency to adjust period-to-period order quantities; and observation bias – the tendency to let the degree of demand feedback influence or...
متن کاملImpact of RFID technology on supply chain decisions with inventory inaccuracies
Inventory inaccuracies are costly and prevalent in many industries. This paper focuses on the impact of RFID technology adoption on supply chain decisions with shrinkage and misplacement problems in the Internet of Thing (IoT). We assume that the supply chain consists of one supplier and one retailer that sell a single product to the customer. By assuming that demand is uniformly distributed, a...
متن کاملThe Value of Information in the Newsvendor Problem
In this work, we investigate the value of information when the decision-maker knows whether a perishable product will be in high, moderate or low demand before placing his order. We derive optimality conditions for the probability of the baseline scenario under symmetric distributions and analyze the impact of the cost parameters on simulation experiments. Our results provide managers with deep...
